SAN REMO, FEBRUARY 25, 1958

TUESDAY EVENING

My dearest Gianna,

I’ve come to my room earlier than usual tonight, because we can’t watch television. The wind is blowing wildly and the antennas are covered with sea salt, so the picture disappears almost completely.

I have here before me Pierluigi and Mariolina who are smiling at me, and the blustery wind and thundering waves seem very far away, almost non-existent. I’m happy and peaceful here with all of you.

I’m still worried about Gigetto. I’m confident it will pass sooner than we think. It’s good that you tell me everything. It’s really true that, when people truly love each other, the joys are greater and worries lighter. With a Mamma like you, who takes things seriously and gets right to work, illnesses are quickly relieved and in the best possible way. I will never be able to thank you enough for this.

I really like this hotel. There’s a wonderful view of the sea from my room and the dining room. From the hotel’s garden I can step right onto the beach and the pier.

My digestion is good and I’m eating well. Even my teeth and gums are fine, as if I had never had any problem.

I was so happy to hear your dear voice this evening and to hear that all is well with our little angels.

How comforting it is to read and re-read your dear letters. I have here before me your letter of Sunday afternoon, and I too can’t wait to see you all again and embrace you.

Wednesday evening

Thank you for phoning me today, and let’s hope things continue to go well for our little angels.

I was out in the sunshine this morning from 10:00 to noon, even though the wind was strong.

The waves are very high; we can’t go out on the pier.

In the afternoon there were the usual clouds and very strong winds. I hope tomorrow we’ll have some sun with no wind.

I visited with Luigia from 3:00 to 4:30 PM; she mended my coat and … sewed on two buttons for me, button-popper that I am.

She absolutely had to take at least two of my shirts to iron them, even though I had already made arrangements for the hotel to take care of that.

She’s not looking forward to my having to leave soon.

Thursday morning

I went back to the Casinò Theater in San Remo until 1:00. Maybe I’m too harsh and demanding in judging theatrical plays. The only good part—and I do understand that it is not a little thing—was the last five minutes in which all of the comedy’s protagonists (two couples and a seventeen-year-old daughter) finally agreed, after fifteen years of marriage, that they must put aside all their differences and live as good couples, and the daughter decided to get married.

Gino Cervi115 played “Patata.” I did not even recognize Padovani,116 maybe because of the part she had: no life, no soul, she just recited her lines vacantly.

This morning it was cloudy and windy, with flurries, and only around 11:00 did a few rays of the sun peek out.
